He smiled. ‘Buenos dias,’ he said, greeting me with a smile. ’ I smiled back. ‘Happy New Year to you,’ I answered. ’ he asked. ‘Fine, thank you,’ I answered. It was pleasant conversation on a beautiful, sunny day. ’ he asked in Spanish, a normal first question amongst travellers. ‘Los Angeles,’ I answered. ’ He introduced himself as Manuel. He was very jovial, smiling the entire time. As we got to talking about LA, we were joined by a pudgy Brit who asked if we knew of anywhere to get something to eat.

Hank ducked through the hatch of his boat and brought out a handful of old clothes that he undoubtedly kept around to use as wax rags. He sniffed each article before he tossed it over to me, intimating that they had once been worn but not washed since: first, a nice, green Dutch Army sweater made of wool; then, three pairs of thin, green long johns; and then a couple of thin, green, long-sleeved, thermal undershirts. The tags read ‘Half-wol’ – obviously some sort of hybrid, but better than nothing.

Until then, Jarle and Manuel had gotten along famously, like brothers. At night they would joke and giggle like a bunch of teenage girls, slapping each other giddily across their bunks as they curled up for the night. But here the first chink showed in the armour; it was the first time the two did not get along. It would not be the last. Manuel began to bristle at authority with an irritability and shortness of fuse. That Jarle was so young an authority, that they had been like brothers for the few days they had known each other, made no difference.
